Downey Sponsors Resolution Against Christian Nationalism

On Monday, January 9th 2023, the Administrative Council of Downey Avenue Christian Church voted unanimously to add Downey's name as an initial co-sponsoring congregation to the upcoming General Assembly resolution entitled, Calling the Church to Oppose Christian Nationalism.

The General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be held July 29th - August 1st 2023, in Louisville, KY. This national gathering of Disciple denominational delegates and ordained clergy from around the United States and Canada meets to vote on resolutions to direct the continued learning and advocacy of the Church as a whole.

The momentum to draft a General Assembly resolution, came in response to an initial call championed by Rev. Rebecca Littlejohn (Vista La Mesa CC - La Mesa, CA) to use last year's World Communion Sunday as an opportunity for pastors across the nation to speak against the heresy of Christian Nationalism in their Sunday morning sermons. The response (and rebuke) was so pronounced and theologically aligned nationwide that the participants saw an assembly resolution as a natural next step. Downey participated with sermons on Oct 2nd & Oct 9th, 2022 (visit Sermon Station for archived sermons).

There were 14 co-sponsoring congregations (including Downey) at the time of resolution submission, which come from states across the U.S., including MO, MT, HI, KY, IN, CA, OR, TX, WA, FL, and OK. A final draft of the resolution was submitted for review by the General Board on January 30th, 2023.
